Encounters of the Feline Kind

When you're a cat-owning knitter, you learn to follow clues. I stepped out of the shower and saw... the back of my dad's sweater! Lying on the floor right in front of the bathroom door, so it was the first thing I laid eyes on when the shower door opened. So I shrieked for Mr. Batty. I don't think I was very articulate, it was something along the line of, "Sweetie! My sweater is on the floor!"
He came to rescue it, but as you can see, some damage has been done. Of course, I should have known. The other day, I found Morgana happily chomping on a skein of alpaca with her claws buried in the sweater. It took a good hour with a needle to tug the stitches back into some semblance of their former perfection (the giant hole turned out to be stretched-out, not ripped yarn).
Fortunately, this is the wrong side. It's a reverse stockinette sweater.

Once I had dried off, I followed the perpetrator's trail. Really, it wasn't too hard... the yarn led the way.

Busted! The black bag under the giant Ziplock bag contains the coveted alpaca, and that would be Morgana making a move for it. Naughty kitty!

I am exhausted. After a lot of tugging and pulling, the back of the Dad Sweater is finished, all skeins of alpaca have been liberated from the clutches of their fuzzy tormentor, and I just have the ends to weave in and 2 sleeves to knit. But I have to make sure I keep everything away from this cat.

She can't resist the alpaca.

My cats love alpaca too, and will pull the stitches out of shape in the same way. I'm glad you got it fixed!

I think you should threaten to knit HER into a sweater then pull at her stitches and see how she likes it...hehehehe.

I must have the weirdest cat because she doesn't have any interest in any yarn whatsoever. Wool, alpaca, cashmere... nothing! Mind you, I haven't tried *really* expensive yarn yet. Knowing her already "particular" food preferences, I bet she'd go loopy for some qiviut! :-)

On the plus side, she's got exquisite taste in yarn!

I agree, she has excellent taste! Good luck keeping her away from it until the sweater is done. Then, maybe some cotton knitting for summer? :-)

My kitties only seem interested if I am knitting or spinning the yarn. I think the movement attracts them.

I'm glad you were able to fix the sweater.

my cats also have the need to destroy yarn cakes. i have no idea why.

What is it about alpaca that drives kitties nuts? My cat is too old to care much about my yarn, but my parents' cats cannot stay away from me when I'm at their house and knitting alpaca.

Maybe you should knit her a distraction swatch with the overs. That way, she'll get her alpaca fix, and hopefully stay away from the wips!

Oh my she is a naughty little black kittie - my little black demon ignores knitting, yarn, fibre and needles.....has a passion for guitar picks though!

WOW! My cats are crazed, but haven't gotten into my yarn stash yet. They have made several pulled in sweaters that have been left unguarded in the laundry pile though! Hope the sweater is back on track and away from Morgan the fuzzy tormentor!

Morris used to attack my alpaca. I solved that problem by making him a little catnip mouse with some leftover alpaca. Perhaps that would work with Morgana?

My cat stays away from my yarn, but I have to poke the ends of my needles in or she'll start chomping away. There's something about wooden needles that she loves.

Sorry about the sweater, though. It's hard when a cat decides something's hers.

the cat would no longer be living with me if she had done that

I know how she feels. I also simply can't resist the siren call of alpaca. Must... touch... yarn...

I so know how you feel! Mia ate the cast on side of a shawl I was blocking last year.

Shame, shame, shame, and then to pose so wantonly for the blog. What a slattern. Knit her an alpaca sweater and make her wear it the next time she's so bad.

Wow. I'm glad that our cats are usually indifferent to yarn. Although the other day a ball of spun something-or-another that I use for leaders was mysteriously wound around the living room furniture. Perhaps I speak too soon.
