Feminism Fail

Yesterday, I got a little brochure from Dell. Hey, computers, cool! After all, they sell the awesome Alienware gaming computers that you can trick out until they cost several thousand dollars more than you can afford. I'll never buy one, but I sure like to drool over them. So I opened the brochure and found...

"Now you can customize your Dell laptop with your favorite OPI Nail Lacquer shade!" I'm not making this up. It comes in lovely colors like "Princesses Rule!" -- and if you don't believe me, here's the link to their website.
Because this is what I really, truly care about when buying a new machine: Will it match my nail polish? Will I look cute holding the laptop? Will all my co-workers die of jealousy because they wish they had this pearlescent pink piece of technology?

Women don't want technical specifications. Women don't want to... you know, do stuff with their computers. They want them to match their nail polish. Aaaaaaaaaaaaargh. I thought we were further along.

OK, I will admit that being able to pick the color of my laptop has some appeal (My netbook is white and boring. My old one has stickers all over it.), but yeah... that is NOT the be-all end-all in what will make me choose the thing. It's more like "Hey, this laptop will do what I want. Oh, and bonus - I can pick the color."

I like the idea of being able to pick a color. Or the Red Sox logo. They even have skulls, which is awesome. I'd pay through the nose for a laptop with bats on it!
But matching my nail polish? And what happens when I change my nail polish?

I think "Now, you can get a laptop that showcases your personal style" would be a much stronger ad.

Hmm. I don't wear nail polish. But then, I'm a Mac person.

Well, I can't stand wearing nail polish, but there's something appealing about a laptop in "I'm Not Really a Waitress," the most perfect red ever. (Or maybe I'd just really love some nice squishy yarn in that colour...)I do love that they're allowing so many options for customizing, even if the nail polish ones in particular are more than a little condescending. At least it's not "Hannah Montana"!

I have to admit that when I saw they had "I'm Not Really a Waitress" as an option, I may have been a bit excited. >.>

Ooo… an Argentini Bikini laptop? *snort*

Another reason I'm glad I'm a Mac.

They're limiting themselves, too. I'm sure a ton of dudes would dig the colors but might not get past (or even look at) the nail polish bit. Personally, I'm just disappointed that the colors are swirly.

How do they match the nail polish I do not wear? Do I get a laptop with a French Manicure, then?

Well i find it amusing to have a nail polish and ur laptop matchin... and as far as how many takers i would guess quite a lot.. look at singapore, the city is high in fashion and the ladies dress up a lot.. they doll up their laptops with prety colourful stickers (most in pink ) so i wouldnt be surprised if they would lap it up here like hotcakes.. !

My dad tells of my grandmother getting her first car - one of the first automatic transmissions. It came with a matching lipstick (the car was red). You could buy new lipstick at the dealer when your lipstick ran out.
