Spinning interlude

I had a plan: finish my red scarf on Tuesday at a local SnB, then get started on Jespere's socks and the husband's sweater. It didn't happen. Why?

One of the ladies at the SnB brought in her portable spinning wheel! It was my first time ever trying to use a wheel, and I spent over 2 hours learning how to get it to go in the right direction (not at all easy), how fast to draft and treadle, and what to do when the wheel sucked all the yarn through the little gizmo with the hole in it (I'm sure it has a name, but I don't know what it is).
It was amazing. When I wasn't overthinking it, I actually managed to just sit and spin for a few minutes at a time! Then, of course, I'd notice, and there went the yarn. But I can tell it's addictive.

So today and tomorrow, I'll be knitting the red scarf like a crazy person. It's getting dropped off sometime tomorrow or Saturday, and then on to socks.

And dreams of owning a spinning wheel. That was fun!

The names for parts of a spinning wheel are rather amusing. The hole that the yarn goes through is called the Orifice. The yarn winds onto the bobbin (which is, admittedly, rather boring) which is part of the Flyer mechanism (the bit that the drive wheel turns via the whorls & drive band). The Flyer is held up by the Maidens, and the Maidens sit on the Mother-of-All.

Congratulations with all your spinning!

Oh yeah see, that's why I try to stay away from spinning wheels!

I haven't touched my wheel in months! A huge box of roving showed up the other day though- one whole fleece ready for spinning. I can't believe how much there is. I was hoping it would have stopped smelling like sheep when they cleaned it at the mill, but I guess that lanolin is tough stuff... I think I'll wait and spin it outside in the summer.

You'd better watch out. Spinning tends to stick, and it's a stubborn virus. Soon you'll be hounding the postperson for the delivery of your wheel.

One of us! One of us! bwhahahahahahaha

Seriously, if knitting is a drug, then spinning is crack. You'll love it so. Kbbspin.org always has cheapo wheels advertised, just in case you catch the bug! (insert evil smiley here)
